SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. It occurs when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. This can manifest in various ways: GI issues (constipation, diarrhea, bloating, reflux, nausea, abdominal pain), food sensitivities, fatigue, brain fog, and vitamin/mineral deficiencies. SIBO is diagnosed through a breath test, which measures the amount of hydrogen and methane that you breathe out. Newer tests will include a third gas: hydrogen sulfide. These gases are produced by the bacteria in the small intestine. SIBO is treated with antibiotics and managed with a prokinetic, diet, and lifestyle changes. It can be caused by a variety of things and recurrence often occurs when the root cause isn’t addressed.
